Unpacking Glass Bottle Cutting: A Sustainable Solution from the YASD LOGIC Project

Malawi is currently facing a serious waste management challenge. In cities like Lilongwe and Blantyre, glass bottles are being carelessly dumped in markets, riverbanks, and open spaces due to limited recycling infrastructure. This growing issue threatens both the environment and public health.

To address this, Youth Action for Success and Development (YASD), with support from IM Swedish Development Partners, is introducing glass bottle cutting under the LOGIC (Local Green Innovation Champions) Project. This innovation offers a practical and creative way to turn waste into opportunity.

Glass bottle cutting helps reduce environmental pollution by keeping non-biodegradable waste out of communities and natural spaces. Instead of being thrown away, glass bottles are being repurposed into useful and decorative items such as drinking glasses, lamps, and plant holders. This not only promotes sustainability but also encourages creativity and reuse.

Most importantly, the initiative empowers young people with practical skills that can lead to income generation. With youth unemployment at a high, especially in urban areas, these skills are opening doors to small-scale businesses and financial independence. It also supports the idea of a circular economy one where waste is viewed as a valuable resource rather than a problem.

This simple but impactful solution responds directly to visible challenges in Malawi, such as the overflowing dumpsites in Area 24 and the lack of proper waste enforcement in townships. Through this work, YASD is showing that environmental action and economic empowerment can go hand in hand.
